Crisis

Committee Chairs

IHyeon Rha President

Hello delegates! My name is IHyeon Rha, and I will be the President Chair for Crisis!

This will be the eleventh conference that I will be attending and my fourth time chairing. I am currently a senior at SMIC Private School, and sadly this year will be my sixth and final year in MUN, along with SMICMUN marking the end to my high school MUN career. Since my first Crisis experience, Crisis has held a special place in my heart as my personal favorite, as well as the most chaotic and liveliest committee that I have ever been in.

We will be debating an exciting topic, traveling back in time to the year 2000 to experience the extent to which a computer virus can impact global affairs. My fellow chairs and I will bring you an unforgettable experience that may or may not be historically accurate and strongly encourage any and all types of creative solutions. I hope that through this conference, Crisis will leave an indelible mark on yourself and your MUN career. See you all in March!

Joyce Chow Deputy President

Hello delegates, my name is Joyce Chow, a sophomore at Shanghai High School International Division. I will be serving as your Deputy President for Crisis in SMICMUN VIII. Although I majorly participate in UNA-USA formatted conferences, I am relatively seasoned in THIMUN with half a year of coaching experience.

Upon receiving the notice of chairing Crisis, I was delighted. Crisis is truly a committee where one can expect the unexpected. I am excited to see what kind of Crisis character arcs you guys can develop through your notes. Crisis also allows for a more creative approach to speeches, so I will be looking out for your artistic rhetorical choices in session. Finally, delegates, don't be afraid to stand in opposition to the popular opinion, stand firm on your beliefs, and debate for your cause.

Daniel Yao Backrooms President

Hello all! My name is Daniel Yao and I'll be your Crisis Backrooms President. I am currently a junior (or 11th grade). I have been part of MUN for 2 years and ongoing. What makes me a little more specialized as your Backrooms president is being the Vice President of our school's RPG club, which has honed my skills in adapting to dynamic situations and creating situations that motivate problem solving.

As all diplomacy ideally goes, success comes to those who can navigate complex alliances while maintaining their own interests. Sacrifices will be made, but which ones will greatly determine how successful your plans may be. A mix of creativity and bold decisions will most definitely stand out, as ability to unite a divided room is the ultimate goal to diplomacy.

I hope that together we'll be able to create and engaging and dynamic experience together and look forward to seeing how you all deal with this tech crisis!

Oscar Ma Backrooms

Hey, everyone of the crisis committee!!!

I will be one of your backroom members for this SMICMUN, my name is Oscar, I'm a Y11 student of YCIS Puxi. This would be my third time participating in an MUN conference, yes but trust me I'm experienced enough given this position. ;)

MUN isn't just playtime for future politicians, it is an opportunity, a chance for education and more importantly, an experience for you. Those who will soon take over this engine of prosperity and deliver great to the world, a demand that none other than you here can fulfill. Delegates, you are the chosen ones, and we are here to guide you on your path of valour. Together, we pave the way to your success and future, an age of technology.

The ILOVEYOU virus is an interesting topic running into modern technology, and how destructive the misuse of such can be. It educated the world of dangers of the future and tripped the ambitions of humanity from its tracks. Don't worry, you might think this crisis is just "digital", but when the world starts playing the blame games of justice, it's going to be what you call, havoc.

- Corfork.

Kai Lin Zhu Backrooms

Hi delegates! I am Kai Lin Zhu, your back room for SMICMUN. I've participated in Model United Nations for around 4 years, and I can tell you that a memorable conference means taking risks, and improving yourself. I have experienced Crisis myself as a delegate in subjects such as the July Crisis of World War One, and I can tell you that the crisis conference you will experience is like none other before. The topic for the conference is very creative, and provides many opportunities for outside the box thinking, as well as many ways to discover and solve modern world crises as delegates of MUN. So I hope for bravery, boldness, and creativity in notes, and I also hope that all of you will find chances to improve, learn, and enjoy during your time in Crisis!

Committee Topic

Addressing the Global Cyberspace Threat of the "ILOVEYOU" Virus

In May of 2000, inboxes around the world were met with an unassuming email with a simple subject line: "I LOVE YOU". What appeared to be an innocent love note quickly spiraled into one of the earliest global cyberspace attacks as the virus duplicated itself. The first traces of the virus has been detected - one has multiplied into two and two has multiplied to four. The committee session takes place as the virus begins to spread with imminent chaos.
